Chike had a presence that made you pay attention to him. He was crazy ambitious, like me. He was encompassing.

We got married right after college. I was active duty in the Army and stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was crazy and confident, and once he figured out what he wanted, he would do anything to accomplish it.

He felt like there was so much more that he could always be doing and could give the world. His determination and positive energy were so amazing to be around. He joined the Army while we were in Alaska and loved it.

He had high expectations for himself and me. He was critical but fair and with the most genuine intentions. He was the guy everyone wanted on their team because he made you better and he made you laugh. That is what I loved most about him. He believed we could do anything and always wanted and expected more. To have someone that sees your potential and holds you accountable with the love that he had was incredible. I try to be thankful for the time that we did have because I know some people don’t ever get that in their life.

Chike knew the possibilities were endless if people came together to get something done. “Overcome” was his word and something he always came back to when we got bad news. He believed in his purpose to help and empower other people. He always tried to be an inspiration to others.

Chike and I always said we wouldn’t let this experience define us but instead let it guide our mindset to fix the inefficient approach and shortcomings of current clinical research. During his treatment, Chike was adamant about giving back and contributing to the cure for lymphoma. He frequently talked about starting a non-profit. I founded the Chike Springer Foundation in honor of him, and as a foundation, we are determined to learn from Chike’s battle with cancer and to help others who are fighting a similar battle.

I wish he were here to see what we are doing or at least help us out a little bit, but I know he would be so proud. He would push us all to do better every day, to believe in ourselves, and go farther together.
